Letters From The Marshall Islands

Marshall Islands with Laura, the editor of the South-Pacific Pocket Guide

The Marshall Islands gave us two things I thought I already knew well after years of travelling through the Pacific.

Beautiful water and handicrafts.

It turns out I had seen nothing yet.

The water was so crystal clear that we could look down from the boat and see coral, fish and giant clams beneath us.

Every shade of blue seemed to exist in the lagoon.

Pale turquoise around the islands.

Deep blue across the channels.

Perfectly clear water wherever we looked.

But the biggest surprise was the art: The Most Amazing Handicrafts I Have Ever Seen!!!

That is not something I say lightly.

We have travelled across the South Pacific and seen incredible weaving in almost every island nation we have visited. The handicrafts of the Marshall Islands were on another level.

The weaving was so delicate and detailed that I kept finding myself leaning closer to understand how it had possibly been made by hand.

Earrings, baskets, fans, flowers and wall decorations woven from pandanus and coconut leaves. Some pieces were bold and colourful. Others were so fine and intricate that they looked almost impossible to create.

This was not simply art made for visitors. It felt like culture being carefully woven into something you could see, hold and wear.

Discovery Time!

A culture beautifully showcased through art.

One of the most unexpected experiences of our trip was attending the Miss Marshall Islands Pageant.

Beauty pageants are not usually events we pay much attention to.

Honestly, we probably would not have expected one to become such an important part of our travels. But this one completely changed our perspective.

The event was not simply about beauty.

Sometimes travel teaches you through museums and historical sites. Sometimes it teaches you while sitting in a packed audience, watching an entire country celebrate who they are.

Extraordinary weaving.

It was a celebration of the islands, the people and the extraordinary creativity of Marshallese culture.

Crystal-clear water.

Tiny lagoon islands.

Culture expressed through everything people create and wear.

The Marshall Islands were beautiful in the way I expected.

But they were fascinating in ways I never could have predicted.
